"The More You Sweat in Peace the Less You Bleed in War"
The inspecting officer from the Head Office soon after finishing the job he was entrusted to, was addressing a small gathering of staff. He went on pointing out every anomaly and defect he observed during his walk around. He crushed the morale of everyone present there.
(The staff had a tough time working on long extended hours for this day of inspection)
And then finally, with an apparent contempt filled face and a raising of his left eyebrow, he uttered " The more you sweat in peace the less you bleed in war" He paused and asked, "Can anyone tell me the meaning?". He looked at his tired preys.
As he expected nobody answered.
He trained his guns at the Deputy Manager who also happens to be the in charge of the office standing on his left. "Yes Mr Wilson?"
Mr Wilson was praying that somebody from the crowd answered it or else...but the inevitable happened. He corrected his slouching posture and matching expressions in vain and began,
"Thank you Sir for giving me the opportunity. Actually, it's a great caring statement by our respected sir and the meaning is, as we go through a severe summer this time around, if you sweat more, the dehydration will be so high that you may get sunstroke and then you won't be left with any blood. You become anemic. Because its the water in our body which turns into blood"
Anticipating a pat on his back at his profound knowledge in Hematology he rotated his head towards the inspector.
A few micro droplets of sweat appeared on his forehead. Without wiping he enquired "Anyone can give a better explanation that can be somewhere a little closer to the actual meaning?" He turned towards the Number 2.
No.2 didn't want to let go off the golden chance to exploit the situation. He can both outsmart his boss and thus establish a good connect with the inspecting officer with a master stroke.
He said " I always had great interest in the language and the meaning of the proverb goes like this, you should follow a healthy life style. As you all know I regularly hit gym after the office. So do exercise more so that you excrete more sweat and do it under only the guidance of a trainer otherwise you will bleed badly"
The guest was reeling under pain. He could feel the drops emanating from different parts of his body getting collected to form rivulets . He said "OK OK I quit, I think I should stop this here". As he was about to wind up the session someone called out,
"Sir please let me, I will"
Every pair of eyes panned towards the source of that voice. There stood the spoken English tutor who came twice a week to engage the staff under the latest company policy.
Now it has become a prestige issue. Though not on regular payroll of the organization if he explained it correctly, it would be a saving grace . Everyone awaited with bated breath for the deep baritone.
He cleared his voice and began.
"Sir whenever we think of war we get images of bloodshed in mind. War means blood. What is the point of fighting a war if you have very little blood". Taking a dig at No 2 he added, "If you waste all your time sweating you will be left with no blood to fight a war"
The inspector fainted realizing that if the session continued this way, he is going to sweat all his blood out and soon be resting in peace.
